I have an idea.
Ok, I have a lot of ideas. How cool would it be if you could blink and be somewhere else in the world? See? Ideas.
Anyway, I have some ideas based in reality as well.
After some pretty intense discussions with my roommate Jim this weekend, I have an idea that I’m going to do right now. Do you have any idea how awesome it is to have good friends who push back on your ideas? Over good beer? It’s a great thing to have in life.
Right. My idea.
I’m going to make beer.
And you’re invited.
Starting in December, at least one Sunday a month, I’m going to do Breakfast and Brewing. Fancy title, I know.
Here’s the plan. Come over around 11am on a Sunday. We (we being the collective housemates of.. our house) will make breakfast. Bacon, eggs, coffee. There may or may not be awesome cartoon watching – narf! – and there may or may not be bloody mary components available.
Then around noon or 1, we’ll make beer. No matter your level of brewing experience, you can help. I, or someone else with some brewing knowledge will explain things in as little or much detail as you want. If you help, you get to take some beer home with you (a month later).
There are many more details, but that’s the gist of it.
What do you think? Want to come over and help me make some beer?
[edit] If you want to be alerted to these awesome Breakfast and Brew days, or to new posts in general, sign up for the mailing list.
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
No really, how would I find out when these are happening? I think an email newsletter would be good.
I hadn’t thought about how I’d get the word out. A newsletter would work. Plus the twitter, of course. I’ll let you know when I have the newsletter set up.
Both your sister and Erika N. tell me you’re a good fellow. And I like beer. And I like bloody marys. I’m not a big fan of breakfast, but I can make an exception.
So yes. I’d be in. Sounds like a good idear, as they say in RI.
How are you not a fan of breakfast? I’m so confused. π
That’s a cool idea, I’m interested but I live in Milwaukee. I may steal this idea though.
I’m assuming this is sort of a PR event for you/your brewery?
Ya, sort of a networking idea, a way to
a) share the love of homebrew
b) get others homebrewing
c) make sure I know what the hell I’m talking about
d) get my beer in people’s hands
sounds good, will you then be putting labels on these beers? I’d think that might be a good move, the more promotion the better, even though that’s a pain.
I could always slap a sticker on the bottle, I suppose π
You may also want to check on the laws in Colorado about removing homebrew from the premises. I know some states have laws that homebrew must be consumed in the home it was brewed in. And while most states probably don’t care about enforcing such a law, since you are planning on going pro it could be more of an issue or a hurdle to becoming licensed if any problems arise.
Ya, I need to look into that more. I think if you claim “I’m a homebrewer” you can move homebrew between homes. I’ll look into it further though, and report back.
Sounds like a plan, keep us posted!
PJ,
Sounds like a great idea. I’d love to sit down over breakfast and beer and discuss brewing. I would like to start a brewery also but don’t have the expertise needed to brew a great beer. However, I might be able to help with the start up costs.
Sounds great! Keep an eye on the blog, or sign up for the mailing list, and I’ll make sure you know when the brew day is.
I think you should put out a tip jar to raise funds for the brewery. People have been known to pay for both breakfast and homebrew lessons.

PJ, if you’re not careful, I’ll make my way over there when I’m back in CO from med school this thanksgiving or over my christmas break. I’ve been reading your blog/twitter. Good Stuff
Worse things have happened. See you soon.
Great idea. Have friend who lives in Gilbert. bad news is he drinks coors lite. If we are in town hope we can stop in brewday. Plan on doing same at mi casa in coming year. Cheers
You’re looking to start a brewery – and I think you stumbled onto your real business.
No, seriously.
There’s a place somewhat nearby me (IncrediBrew) that does something like this, only I think they do it _daily_. They make partial grain batches. “You”, the customer, come in and learn about brewing, brew your own batches (using their recipes, materials, kegs, etc) and come back 2 weeks later to bottle. It’s not the most amazing beer ever tasted, but it’s not bad. The cost is $50 to show up, and $12 a share (a share is a 24 count of 22oz bottles). They can provide the bottles for a nominal fee, or you can bring your own. I think they bottle and sell the remaining beer, as well as brew on the side to sell to local restaurants (which is really where the most “loyal” customers to a brewery are, as I understand it).
They’ve been around for some time, and manage to have a strong following of locals. I found out about the place through a christmas gift (I’ve been home brewing for a couple of years while now).
Regards,
Aaron
Where is this place? This is actually one of the plans I’m working on!
